The use of essential oils (extracted from herbs, flowers, resin, woods, and roots) in body and skin care treatments is known as aromatherapy. Used as a healing technique for thousands of years by the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, essential oils aid in relaxation, improve circulation, and help the healing of wounds. Aromatherapy diffusers are utilized to fill the massage room with the scent of the oils. Specific essential oils are blended by the aromatherapist and added to a carrier oil, such as almond oil, to be used during the massage. Each oil has its own unique characteristics and benefits. The following are some of the common essential oils we use at A Nurturing Touch Massage & Bodywork and their properties.

Grapefruit: Antidepressant, diuretic, euphoric, stimulant, tonic, has a cleansing effect on circulation, kidneys, lymphatic cysts. Good for muscle fatigue, stiffness, nervous exhaustion and jet lag.

Lavender: Analgesic, antidepressant, hypotensive, antispasmodic, sedative, nervine. Good for muscle spasm, arthritis, sprain, headache, tension, anger, irritability, insomnia, stress, anxiety and hysteria.

Peppermint: Analgesic, antispasmodic, nervine, anti-inflammatory. Good for headache, neuralgia, muscular spasm/ache, arthritis, lethargy, mental fatigue, depression and shock.

Roman Chamomile: Pain relieving, anti-inflammatory. Good for headache, sprains, arthritis, bursitis, neuralgia, PMS, stress, anxiety, anger and insomnia.

Rosemary: Analgesic, antispasmodic, decongestant, diuretic, hyperstensive, restorative, tonic, stimulant. Good for arthritis, headache, muscular soreness, bruising, cramps, general debility, mental fatigue, stress, depression, lethargy and apathy.
